George Inn, Arundel Road, Littlehampton

Littlehampton pub history index

The old ‘George Inn’ stood in the High Street, opposite the northern end of Surrey Street. There are no records of how long it stood there but its last owners were a family named Sparks. In the early 19th Century Mrs Ann Sparks, a widower, gave up the inn and moved to the ‘Norfolk Hotel’ in Surrey Street. The old ‘George Inn’ was pulled down by Mrs Sparks’ two sons who built a pair of shop premises with dwellings above in its place.
The licence for the ‘George’ was transferred to a large house in Arundel Road on the corner with Ferry Road, later Terminus, Road where it stayed until the 1870s when it was purchased by Upperton Lear, a Solicitor, who greatly extended the building. **
The building remained until circa 2006 as a Solicitor’s premises when it was demolished to make way for new flats. *
