Littlehampton pub history index
Earlier at 17 River Road, e.g. 1881, and at 18 River Road by 1891. *
The publican immediately prior to Thomas Rice, a Welshman, was Thomas Jutten. Both publicans had rather unfortunate deaths, Thomas Jutten dying from sheer want and Thomas Rice after being thrown from his conveyance, a horse cart or carriage of some kind presumably. **

1871 Census:
The enumerator for District 8, which included River Road, did not complete
his listings sequentially, he seems to have dodged about somewhat making the
tracing of pub proprietors very difficult. *
He incorrectly annotated most of the River Road properties as being in
Surrey Street from before the Ship and Anchor, number 3, to beyond the Rose
and Crown, number 38. He then recorded Ferry Road (now Terminus Road),
Hampton Court and Purbeck Place, finally listing the remainder of River Road
annotating it as such. *
Hampton Court and Purbeck Place were not listed where they were located
geographically in either River Road or Ferry Road but were listed one after
the other as above. *
