Norfolk Hotel, 9 Surrey Street, Littlehampton

Littlehampton pub history index

The ‘Norfolk Hotel’ was built around 1824 by Mrs Ann Sparks, former landlady of the old ‘George Inn’ when it was located in the High Street. During the 19th century it was the most prominent hotel in Littlehampton.
The ‘Norfolk Hotel’ was a coaching inn and coaches ran daily from there to Fetter Lane in London, a journey which took around seven hours. Behind the hotel was a yard owned by a man called Keywood; he also sent vehicles up to London but his were low wagons taking goods and livestock and the occasional less affluent passenger. His wagons took around 24 hours to cover the same distance as the coaches.
The hotel had a large assembly room in which some of the town’s religious groups held services before they were able to build suitable churches or chapels for themselves elsewhere in the town. **
