Littlehampton pub history index
No longer in existence, the date that it went out of use is
uncertain. The building is shown in its original form in the 1932 1:2500
Ordnance Survey map but in the 1959 version is shown as two premises. On the
1970 version of the map the buildings have gone, replaced by a works area. *
The following entries for Leah Jupp do not have a public house ascribed to them
but looking at the property sequences in the 1841, 51 and 61 Censuses from known
locations and comparing them it is almost certain to be this public House. *

1871 Census:
The enumerator for District 8, which included River Road, did not complete his
listings sequentially, he seems to have dodged about somewhat making the tracing
of pub proprietors very difficult. *
He incorrectly annotated most of the River Road properties as being in Surrey
Street from before the Ship and Anchor, number 3, to beyond the Rose and Crown,
number 38. He then recorded Ferry Road (now Terminus Road), Hampton Court and
Purbeck Place, finally listing the remainder of River Road annotating it as
such. *
Hampton Court and Purbeck Place were not listed where they were located
geographically in either River Road or Ferry Road but were listed one after the
other as above. *
This listing was determined by the succeeding known information. Mrs Leah Jupp
was a lodger at a property further along River Road towards the Steam Packet in
this Census. *

1881 / Mary A Olliver / Wife / 50 / Cold Waltham, Sussex / Census
1881 / Isabella Knight / Boarder, scholar / 15 / Keymer, Sussex / Census
(Note: The Enumerator seems to have followed a sometimes haphazard route along
River Road and whilst this entry is not given a road number it is immediately
before road number 39 in the census records, the premises numbers running
consecutively as the opposite side of the road was wharves and warehousing
only.)
1891 / George Olliver / Head, Dairyman, milk / 61 / Angmering, Sussex / Census *
1891 / Mary Ann Olliver / Wife / 61 / Stophasm, Sussex / Census
1891 / Isabella Sebbage / Visitor / 26 / Keymer, Sussex / Census
1891 / Thomas Mabbs / Lodger / 79 / Selsea(Selsey!),Sussex / Census
(Note: The above entry is included as whilst George Olliver isnt recorded as an
Innkeeper he still has Isabella living with him plus another lodger intimating
that it might still be a Public House of some kind, possibly a landlord living
elsewhere. See also next listing) *
