Terminus Hotel, 7 Terminus Road, Littlehampton

Littlehampton pub history index

The 1898 1:2500 Ordnance Survey map shows a hotel on the south side of Terminus Road just to the west of the Locomotive Inn’s location also shown on the map. The 1876 version of the map also shows the building but no usage is indicated. This is directly opposite the railway station so is certain to be the ‘Terminus Hotel’.
Latterly it seems to have been incorporated into ‘The Railway Club’ which was demolished mid 2000s and replaced with flats.
The road numbering is a little strange in that the Locomotive Inn was numbered 5 then the odd numbers transfer to the south side of Terminus Road to join the even numbers to become consecutive numbering along the remainder of the road to the ‘Steam Packet’ inn as the railway station and goods yards prevented any continuation of the odd numbering. *

1871 Census:
The enumerator for District 8, which included River Road, did not complete his listings sequentially, he seems to have dodged about somewhat making the tracing of pub proprietors very difficult. *

He incorrectly annotated most of the River Road properties as being in Surrey Street from before the Ship and Anchor, number 3, to beyond the Rose and Crown, number 38. He then recorded Ferry Road (now Terminus Road), Hampton Court and Purbeck Place, finally listing the remainder of River Road annotating it as such. *

Hampton Court and Purbeck Place were not listed where they were located geographically in either River Road or Ferry Road but were listed one after the other as above. *
