White Hart, 19 Surrey Street, Littlehampton

Littlehampton pub history index

The pub began life as ‘The Swan’ in 1761 with the name changing to the ‘Dolphin’ in 1772 at which time it was owned by two brothers. In the 1780s the two brothers had a severe falling out and one left to establish his own pub further along Surrey Street at its junction with High Street which he also named the ‘Dolphin’ – the site of the existing ‘Dolphin Inn’. After some dispute over the names of their respective inns, the brother who owned the original building renamed his premises the ‘White Hart’ in 1784.
The ‘White Hart became the station for the coastal coach established between Brighton and Bognor after the Littlehampton chain ferry came into being in 1825.
The pub briefly became ‘The London Tavern’, (sometime post 1911) before becoming the ‘Cob and Pen’ at the turn of the new millennium and has subsequently been again renamed ‘The White Hart’ in 2012. **
