Public Houses, Inns & Taverns of Slaugham, Sussex

Sussex pub history index

Mid Sussex Times. 30 November 1979 : There is only one pub in Slaugham village now. There used to be three pubs - the White Horse, the Carpenters Arms and the Sundial. The White Horse was within spitting distance of the lynchgate of St Marys. The White Horse provided stabling for the parishioners, but was demolished in 1921.
Warninglid - has the Rifleman, once a spit and sawdust pub, and now one of the most elegant inns around. The landlords son, Keith Hinkley, recently discovered a letter from the Queen regarding the death of the Earl Mountbatten. On the crossroads of Warninglid stands the Half Moon, a 15th century building established as a pub 135 years ago (1844 ). It is believed the Half Moon was once located in an old cottage in The Street which has a half-moon shaped under window.
Warninglid was almost certainly named from a Viking chieftan named Warna, who led his people, named Ing, along a path called a Gelad to a settlement. Thus Warna Ing Gelad means Warna's peoples path.
