St Leonards pub history index
The Piper, originally the ‘Norman Hotel and Tavern’, opened after 1845. *
Called the Norman Arms (2010), but known to locals simply as the Norman, this 1840s pub stands on the corner of Norman Road
and Western Road. At 15 Norman Street in the 1861 and 1871 census. It was demolished and rebuilt in 1938 and this was said to
have been done without the pub ever needing to close! Local legend has it that the Landlord, Leonard Collinson, was known to regulars as "Colly" and a practical joker once took a pony upstairs and tied it to his bed. There had once been a beer house next door called thes Warrior's Arms, but little is known about it. ***
