Railway Inn, Kings Road, St Leonards

St Leonards pub history index

Immediately south of St Leonards Warrior Square rail station, the Railway Inn is a large triangular pub dating from the 1850s and stands on the corner of King's Road and Western Road at their junction with St John's Road. It remains in business.  Listed at Western Road in 1871.

The even larger Royal Hotel, which stands less than 50ft away, was briefly named the Railway Hotel when it was built in the 1870s, but this rather silly and confusing situation was rectified in about 1876 when Railway Inn landlady Mary Cambell moved across the road and renamed it Mrs Cambell's Hotel, which in 1884 was renamed Royal Hotel (see separate listing for Royal Hotel, 1 St John's Road, St Leonards). ***
