The original William IV public house Nutley East Sussex UK

This photo of the William IV is from the archives of Nutley Historical Society East Sussex dated around 1898. The pub certainly existed by 1871 as a beer house which Thomas Weller ran until his death in 1889; followed by his wife Jane (nee Woods). Eli Carter is in charge by 1903. The pub is rebuilt in 1928.

Tunbridge Wells Journal. 25 June 1903
Edward Scott of Maresfield, labourer, was summoned by Eli Carter, for refusing to quit his licensed premises known as William IV, on the 1st June. Pleaded guilty and fined 10s and 4s costs.

The transfer of the licence of the William IV Inn, Nutley, to new premises was granted.

Kent & Sussex Courier. 15 May 1931
East Sussex Licensing Committee at Lewes, confirmed the full on-license to the William IV, Nutley.
Counsel mentioned that the monopoly value had been fixed at £1,800, to be paid on the first full license.

Sussex Express. 12 February 1932 Police REport
There were 33 publicans licences, eight beerhouses licensed for consumption on the premises, 13 licensed grocers etc. and three registered clubs. This was an increase of one publicans license, as the William IV, Nutley, previously a beerhouse was granted a full licence on February 12th. The acreage of the Pwtty Sessional Division was 50,463 and the population was 18,595.

Extension of hours was granted to Frederick William Laeke of the New Inn, Ridgewood, Uckfield and Arthur Hart, of the William IV Hotel, Nutley.

Getting together again for a film show are the licensed victuallers from Lewes and Uckfield.
Checking the film is re-elected chairman Mike Balster of the William IV, Nutley (second on the right). The licensees were attending the annual meeting of their association at the William IV.
The film was shown by sales executive from Arthur Bell Distillers, Bob Shaw (right) who is pictured with elected vice-chairman, Tony Burns of the Fruiterers, Lewes and junior vice-chairman, Roger Pay of the Lamb, Lewes.
With them is chairman of the Sussex Society, Brian Blackman, vice-chairman, Bert Maybury and secretary, Maureen Ryall.
