It was originally two flint cottages and the earliest reference of beer being sold on the premises was in 1783. The name 'Maypole' was first associated with the building in the 1886/87 edition of Pike's Directory when the Inn Keeper was John Wilson. Another Landlord, Albert Fluter, renovated the pub in 1955.

The village of Yapton was originally known as Eappa's farmstead, after the man who believed in St wilfrid, himself responsible for converting the pagans South Saxons to Christianity in the seventh century.
In Yapton, Burtenshaw is famed as the family took over the Maypole Inn in 1914, and in thw 1960's, Mr Byrtenshaw was featured in the local press after tourists had gathered in the village pub ro rake a picture of the "steange country fellw"!

The Maypole Inn, Yapton has been chosen by the Sussex Campaign for Real Ale as the Pub of the Year out of the 1,500 public houses around Sussex; and presented to the landlord, Alan Wingate.
