The Salisbury and Winchester Journal. 19 September 1846
Accident, - On Wednesday afternoon last, as Mr James Goddard, of the Spread Eagle Inn, in this city, was proceeding in a gig through East Harnham, accompanied by another person, the horse, from unnecessary flogging, started at the bottom of Harnham hill, and ran with great speed towards Salisbury.
When the vehicle reached the Rose and Crown Inn, Mr Goddard was thrown from his seat with great violence, his head coming into contact with the wall of the new houses recently erected there, whereby he received a severe cut across the head, and was otherwise very much bruised.

Sale of Portion of the Household Furniture, The Brewing Plant, Casks, Fixtures etc.
Mr Dawkins has been instructed to Sell by Auction, on the premises, as above, on Thursday, June 30, 1859, at 12 o'clock - a Portion of the Household Furniture, Brewing Plant and Fixtures of the above Inn, the property of Mr James Goddard, who is quitting.

James Goddard, late of the Spread Eagle Inn, begs to inform his friends and the Public that he has taken the Wheat Sheaf Inn, Salisbury, and trusts that his efforts to accommodate, combined with the extra stable and House Accommodation the Wheat Sheaf affords, will ensure a continuance of their support.
