York, East Riding of Yorkshire pub history

The pubs of York, and their pub history, are currently being added to this site along with street directories, census listings and the like. There were allegedly 263 pubs in York, in the 16th century; and the oldest pub claims to be from the 13th century, i.e. the Red Lion. In 1851,

I always start with a 1911 census summary, for 1911 census summary - York East and 1911 census summary - York West.
Followed by a York street index of 1913, with all, or most pubs spotted, being added to this. The last two complement each other
I already have a number of listings available to add, very little being modern although I will add 1921 census as I go.

Of 52 Yorkshire inns scheduled by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government during the past year as being outstanding historic or architectural importance, 27 are situated in York.
Fifteen of York's inns have been placed on the statutory list, meaning that they cannot be demolished or altered without notice, and the remainder of the 27 are on the supplementary list, and will be preserved as long as other and wider interests are not unduly affected.
