Another famous old coaching inn in York is the Black Swan, in Peaseholme Green. It claims to have been the birth place of General Wolfe, the hero of Quebec, although he was born in Kent. At one time the Black Swan was the home of weathy merchants, the Bowes family; previously having family members in parliament, or as Lord Mayor of London. After the Bowes family, was the Thompson family, one of whose daughters was Wolfes mother. Restoration in 1930 revealed old brickwork and a wealth of beams on the front wall.
