Previously Harrisons Coffee House, and the Commercial Coffee House by 1824, and Ellis's Hotel by 1841. In 1902 it had nine bedrooms, three of these for travellers, a club room, a private sitting room and a dining room uipstairs. Below were two bars, a smoke room, and a kitchen. There was alsoa licensed bar and dance room in King street. It was demolished in 1904 togeter with the Star and Garter, to allow for the widening of Nessgate to allow the passage of electric trams. A new pub with the same name was built in two stages on a line extending from Low Ousegate to King street. In 1977 planning permission allowed change of usage to offices and retail premises. *HM
