Landlords, legends, census records, and lost taverns.
York from the Scotland NLS site in 1852.. On the map as the Original Dukes Head.
Mentioned in 1795, earlier called the Duke of York. In 1834, John Rounding followed Robert Merrington as licensee, who also opened a Dukes Head at 53 Aldwark. This house variously known as the Original Dukes Head, and the Old Dukes Head. Robert Merrington then reappeared at the Old Dukes Head at 53 Aldwark, in 1838. In 1902 this was a three storey house with three attics, four bedrooms on the floor below, and three beds set aside for travellers. On the ground floor was a tap room, a smoke room, a bar and a very small kitchen. It was referred for compensation in 1903 and closed soon after. *HM
