Landlords, legends, census records, and lost taverns.
York from the Scotland NLS site in 1852. .
Noticeable in modern times from Stonegate, by its entrance door only. It existed by 1644 as mentioned in a sermon. It was once open to the street, but by 1733 it was entered by a passage only. On 5 February of that year it was agreed a signboard should hang outside the building and rent paid to the owners of the properties on which it was fixed. In 1831 it contained a brewhouse. In 1902, it had six bedroms, including three for tavellers, approached by a passage from Stonegate. The ground floor had two smoke rooms, a snug, a serving bar, a large club room and a private kitchen. By 1921 called Ye Olde Starre Inne, and now a grade II listed building. *HM
