Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer. 13 August 1955
Of 52 Yorkshire inns scheduled by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government during the past year as being outstanding historic or architectural importance, 27 are situated in York.
Fifteen of York's inns have been placed on the statutory list, meaning that they cannot be demolished or altered without notice, and the remainder of the 27 are on the supplementary list, and will be preserved as long as other and wider interests are not unduly affected.
The Three Tuns, which is still in business; is next door to The Yorkshireman Inn in 1952. The building was probably constructed in the 16th century and is timber-framed. Records of a pub called the Three Tuns don't appear to exist, but lots of pubs once stood in Coppergate.
Leeds Mercury. 24 April 1939
While York has lost one of its most interesting and ancient hostelries by the closing of the Black Swan hotel, an effort is to be made to preserve another of its ancient inns.
The owners of the Three Tuns in Coppergate have submitted plans for the restoration of this 17th century house and these have been approved by the licensing authorities.
I understand that the new plans provide for the preservation of the antique features of the place.
It is not long since Coppergate possessed more old buildings than any other thoroughfare of similar length in the city. These have gradually disappeared. All those beteween the Church of All Saints or All Hallowes as the ancient name went, were removed for a street widening less than 40 years ago, while one another of the ancient houses on the opposite side have been demolished to make way for modern shops and offices.
