GOMERSAL, BIRSTALL, MIRFIELD AND NEIGHBOURHOODS in 1828.

GOMERSAL, Great and Little, forming one township, and manufacturing village, in the parish of Birstall and wapentake of Morley, In the west riding, is 8 miles from Leeds and Hudderslield, and about 5 1/2 from Bradford. Blankets, woollen cloths, and worsted yarn are manufactured here to a considerable extent; and there are coal mines in the immediate neighbourhood. The village contains nothing of interest to distinguish It from other small places similarly circumstanced as to manufactures. The only places of worship are a chapel belonging to the Moravians, and another to the methodists. The country around here is hilly, and tolerably productive. The number of Inhabitants in the township, in 1821 was 5,952.
Birstall, a village, giving name to a parish in the same wapentake and riding as Gomersal, is 8 1/2 miles from Huddersfield, and 6 1/2 from Leeds. The woollen trade is the staple of the village. The parish church was erected about the time of Henry VIII. upon the site of a more ancient edifice; it is dedicated to St. Peter, and the living is in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and incumbency of the Rev. William M. Heald. Birstall does not furnish the name of a township, but is one of the four villages constituting the township of Gomersal, i. e. Birstall, Great and Little, Gomersal and Birkenshaw. The population of the village is about 2,500.

Mirfield, a village and parish, in the wapentake of Ashrigg and honour of Pontefract, in the west riding, is three miles from Dewsbury; pleasantly situated in a fertile, opulent and respectable neighbourhood, and is one of the favourite seats of the woollen manufacture. Its name is supposed to be derived from Moorfield or Mire-field, probably at one time corresponding with its situation upon a moor or morass. The river Calder runs through the middle of the parish, Mirfield being on its north and Hopton on its southern bank. Up to the year 1261 Mirfield formed a part of the Saxon parish of Dewsbury, from which it was separated at the intercession of the Lady of Sir John Heton with the Pope, who going to mass before dawn on Christmas day, to the parish church (of Dewsbury) was way-laid and robbed, and her principal attendant murdered, at a place called Ravensbrook-layne. Sir John was at Rome at the time of this outrage, and entering into the feelings of his lady, procured the Pope to sanction the erection of a chapel at Mirefield, which, in process of time, became the parish church and this ancient edifice contains some interestirm monuments. The population of the parish, in 1821, was 5,041.
