I am a football historian for Grimsby Town FC and I have recently been
researching a player who played for GTFC from 1907-09. His name was Joseph
Edward Glennon – better known as Teddy Glennon. He was born in Whitwick,
Leicestershire in 1889, though moved to Yorkshire at a young age, living
with his family at Denaby Main. He went on to play football for Kilnhurst
Town, Grimsby Town, Denaby United, Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham County,
playing 250 games and scoring 96 goals for Sheffield Wednesday from 1910 to
1919 - in the 1911 census he was a professional footballer boarding at 35
Hawthorn road, Sheffield. When he died at the young age of 36 on 26 June
1926 his Will stated that he was Joseph Edward Glennon of The Nelson Hotel,
Moorhead, Sheffield. I presume he was the publican (as many ex-professional
footballers became) and not a guest at the hotel. His wife and widow was
Nellie Brittain Glennon (nee Roper). *
