In 1940 during the Sheffield Blitz a bomb landed in the back yard of the pub
which failed to detonate upon impact with the ground. The landlord and his
family were sheltering in the cellar below and would certainly have been
killed if the bomb had detonated. However the impact of the bomb hitting the
ground shook the pub so vigorously that the pub became structurally unsafe
and had to be demolished. *
The landlord of the pub at the time was my Grandfather (Ex-Racehorse jockey)
John Herbert Burton. I do not know the year that he became licensee but it
was during the 1930's *
