In the 1841 Census for Knowstone, Devon. Thomas Snow (65) born 1776 and Ann Snow are shown as living in The Mason's arms Pub in Knowstone. The pub is still trading under the same name. It has been an Inn since about 1400. The Snow family were London publicans from the 1880s to the 1930's. ***

Local knowledge has it that when Knowstone Church was being built the workmen (Masons) lived in the cottages which now make up the pub. Thomas's occupation stated as 'Mason' in 1841 (not publican) assuming Thomas and Ann were running the pub - did they give it its current name? ***
