The Scottish Maps NLS show the Fortune of War
The new Fortune of War opened in 1925 as the Fortune of War Hotel by brewers Ind Coope, it was built to replace the original Fortune of War, a building still stands there in Wash Road (West) at the junction with Noak Hill Road. See the Scottish NLS Map of Billericay and Laindon etc in about 1881.

Fortune of War, Arterial road, Laindon. circa 1925
In March 1925 the Southend Arterial Road (A127) opened. In January 1925 after the building had been completed, Ind Coope made an Order for the removal of of the licence from the Carpenters Arms, Ingrave, which had been voluntarily surrendered for the new "Fortune of War" premises at Laindon Hotel.

Laindon, Essex, to be sold by Auction On Tuesday, May 23rd, 1837 by direction of the Proprietor at the Crown Inn, Billericay : A newly erected Copyhold Cottage (fine certain) situate in the parish of Laindon, in the occupation of __ Grimsell, at £5 per annum, payable half yearly. The fine on death or alienation is only a few shillings; there are no yearly outgoings, Mr Edward Miller, landlord of the Fortune of War public house, Laindon, will on application being made to him, point out the property; and further particulars with Conditions of Sale may be known of the Auctioneers, Billericay.

On Tuesday, March 2nd 1841, at the Market House, Billericay, by order of the Poor Law Commissioners, and under the Direction of the Board of Guardians of the Billericay Union.
Auction Sale of "All those Freehold Timber-built Tenements, with about a Rood of Garden Ground, called the Laindon Poohouses, situate in the parish of Laindon, near the Fortune of War public house.
The property is about three miles from Billericay, includes an extensive frontage, and is an eligible spot to buils upon.

Mr John Horn, landlord of the Fortune of War, Laindon died on Wednesday after a long and painful illness; the cause of death being congestion of the lungs. Deceased was for many years a resident of Little Thurrock, being forman for the late Mr C Landfield for a long time.
