Thomas Beckwith, who was born 1790,  and landlord of the (Western Arms) Silver End Rivenhall to 1861, was the brother of David Beckwith (of the
Cock & Magpie, and also the
Swan), and in 1861 this Inn was taken over by his nephew, John Beckwith, who was Davids son. *
I am a distant relative of Rueben Cottee through my 4 x Great Grandmother
Elizabeth Cottee, she is the wife of my 5 x Great Grandfather, who is David
Beckwith, born 1791 - Elizabeth and Davids graves are in St Margarets
Churchyard opposite where the pub use to be. David and Elizabeths son - my
3 x Great Grandfather was the Innkeeper following Rueben Cottee at the
Swan in Maldon. Davids brother Thomas Beckwith was the Innkeeper at the Western Arms,
Rivenhall. The information here should read that in 1861 this Inn was taken
over by his son John Beckwith. David did have a son called John but he was
born on 19th February 1819 in Little Baddow, whereas Thomas son John was
born 1822 in Rivenhall and lived all his life in Rivenhall - so this should
actually read John Beckwith, who is Thomass son. In these times of my
family they were largely non-conformists and Innkeepers, from Joseph,
another of Thomas sons who was assistant overseer as well as working on his
fathers farm - Whiteheads, in Rivenhall to John staying at other pubs like
the Queens Head, Aldham, Essex run by Alfred Bourg in 1891. Robert Beckwith
who worked with his brother Joseph on Whiteheads Farm, sons of Thomas had a
son Joseph Brand Beckwith, which makes him grandson to Thomas and the
Western Arms got passed to him in 1888/1889. *+
