Jemima Bunce Symington (nee Cowee) was landlady of the Chequers, Newport Pagnell, from January 1889 onwards, the licence having been transferred to her from Joseph Watson at the Petty Sessions that month, and she was still publican there at the time of the 1901 census. *

Jemima's uncle by marriage, Isaac Bunker, was publican of the Five Bells on Berkhamsted High Street, Hertfordshire, from around 1861 (she was then the barmaid there) until about 1866 or '67, after which time one Josiah Bunn took over.
A number of local history websites have stated that the Five Bells lost its licence in 1860 on the grounds of disorderly proceedings in the house, but in fact this happened in late 1871. An appeal was made against the refusal of the licence and was reported in great detail in the Hertford Advertiser, 21 October 1871, page 6. The refusal of the licence was upheld.
