Ware pub history index
This ancient pub has had many names,
including Hatblock, Maidenhead, Charing Cross, Angel, Vine until being renamed
Bell & Sun in around 1750. It seems to have been renamed Bell
& Swan from 1894 to 1908 at least.
It survives as a pub, but has been incorporated into the next door
Old Punch House (more about that one later) and no longer has its own licence.
The 1881 census lists this as the Bell Inn, Market Place. **
