Melvilles 1858 Directory of Kent.
CRANBROOK is a market town and large parish, distant 48 miles from London, 14
miles from Maidstone, and six miles from Staplehurst railway station. It is in
the lathe of Scray, and hundred and union of CranbrooL The population of the
town in 1861 was 1,653, and of the whole parish, 4,029. Formerly, there was an
extensive manufactory of broadcloth, established by the Flemings in 1337. St
Dunstan's church is a large and handsome edifice, in the perpendicular style,
with a square tower
containing a peal of eight bells. The living is a vicarage, in the patronage of
the
Archbishop of Canterbury. There are also seven places of worship for dissenters.
Milkhouse Str5eet is a hamlet, one mile and a half N.E. from Cranbrook. The
church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is a neat edifice, built of stone. The
living is a perpetual curacy. Angley is half a mile west; Glapenbury, two miles
west; Sissinghurst, three miles N.E.; Hartley, half a mile S.W. POST-OFFICE. -
