I have discovered that my ancestors seem to have run nearly every pub in
Dartford/Darenth over the years so your list has been invaluable in
trying to work out how long they were in residence in whichever pub. *
Edwin Loft was the son in law of John and Harriett Martin (my fourth
great-grandparents) who ran the
Fox and Hounds, Lanes End,
Darenth from before 1851 until Harriett’s death in 1871. They had 11
children and their daughter, Eliza Martin became the landlady of the Fox
and Hounds after her mother died. She married Edwin Loft in 1878 and
they ran the Bull’s Head for a time, although I am not sure for how
long. *
Witnesses of their marriage included Edmund Mackay (Landlord of the
Chequers, Darenth) and husband of Eliza’s niece Harriet Amelia Barnett;
Eliza’s brother, John Martin and Amelia White, who is probably related
to Clara Agnes Gausden (nee White). Clara was Eliza’s niece and married
Arthur Gausden who ran the Fox and Hounds, Darenth between 1881-1891. *

The list carries on (and on, and on) as almost all of John and Harriet
Martin’s children became Licensed Victuallers and did many of their
grand-children. My great-great grandparents – John and Jane Barnett ran
the Tiger in St Albans Road and then the
Chequers in Darenth after John’s
sister and brother-in-law Edmund Mackay passed away. George Newns,
another of John Barnett’s brothers-in-law ran the Tiger when John and
his family moved to Darenth. John’s mother was Mary Ann Barnett, first
child of John and Harriet Martin. *
