My relative Edward Mills was born Upchurch 1837. In 1865 at Throwley he married Sarah Thirza Rook 1846 from Throwley or Eastling, Kent. In 1871 he is the landlord of the Rose Inn, 4 Preston St. Faversham. He died Nov 18 , 1878 at The Crown, Upchurch, so clearly had taken it over by then. She remarried Frederick Hinkley at Upchurch, Dec 16, 1879 – at marriage she was described as ‘innkeeper’. By the 1881 census though she was ‘innkeepers wife’ at The Crown, and again in 1891. Newberry Castle took over the Crown, and in 1901 she is a widow ‘beer retailer’ at the Village Club, Red House, Yalding Maidstone. Fred her husband died late 1898 in Maidstone district, so my guess is that they moved together from The crown (maybe as Fred’s health started to fail?). They may have moved even earlier though, as they had two children at The crown , Anne in 1880 and Lena in 1881, both died within a year of birth, so they cant have had the happiest time there after 1881 - having said that Upchurch was a very rough and ready place then for everyone ( brickfields you see..) ***

My relation Newberry Jesse Castle was born Lower Halstow Kent 1842. By 1881 he was running The Britannia at Lower Halstow. In 1901 he is running the Crown at Upchurch. I am told, but haven’t seen it, that some of Newberry’s crockery is still round the fireplace there to this day. ***

One of his sons was Alfred Castle, born at the Britannia in 1878 ( so presumably father was running it before then). In the 1901 census he is running The Castle Inn at Eastchurch apparently on his own - I imagine a venture he set up himself. He married in 1901 (at Upchurch, April 8th) when he was described as Alfred Castle, publican, of Eastchurch son of Newberry Castle;  Newberry died in 1906 (q3) when it looks as if son Alfred took over The Crown more or less at once. He was certainly running it in 1908 ***

Then the debts built up, or he wasn’t up to the job, in any event he took a shotgun and killed himself in 1909 and is buried with his parents in Upchurch. His six children went into orphanages but all survived! ***
