Dating from as least 1815 when mentioned in Victuallers lists. It was shown as the Hope Tavern and Tea Gardens on a map dated 1829, in 1834-45 it was known as the Hope but reverted to Hope & Anchor by 1853. The 1833 Pigots also lists it as the Hope & Anchor. It was rebuilt with a bowling green in 1889. Young & Co bought the lease in 1891 and the freehold in 1933. It was rebuilt again in 1937, this time in Brewers' Tudor style. It was CAMRA pub of the year in 1993 ** This pub has been rebranded as a branch of the Grand Union chain and by at least mid-2012. * Also sometimes listed as the Anchor and Hope, Acre lane, e.g. in the 1847, 1850, 1854 and 1862 license transfers
