I am researching additional information regarding my Great, Great, Great Grandfather William James Makein and his family. According to the London Census of 1871 my William James and his family lived at, and I presume managed, the Three Compasses Pub at the 107 Lower Marsh. William was a licensed victualer and the census shows additional residents as barman and housekeepers. Also listed are two young children, William and Alfred. I am a descendent of Alfred and carry his name. **
The absence of a wife in the census data is because William's wife Matilda died shortly after giving birth to Alfred in September 1869. William continued to live there and remarried in April of 1870. At some point after William, Louisa his wife and the young boys moved to Cape Town, South Africa. William and Louisa's descendants live in South Africa and Australia to this day. **

Morning Advertiser. 04 February 1873
Thomas Barry, 37, was indicted for unlawfully assaulting and beating William Makein.
The prosecutor is the proprietor of the Three Compasses, Lower Marsh, and on the evening of the 29th December the prisoner came into his house with a female he called his wife, and caused disturbance that he was compelled to eject him.
The prisoner became very violent, kicking and striking him, so that he was severely injured. The police came to his assistance when he discovered he had been robbed of his scarf pin; and gave the prisoner into custody for stealing as well as assault. Indicted for assault, he was sentenced to six months hard labour, and to find two sureties in the sum of 25 pounds, to keep the peace for twelve months.
