My late Grandmother, Edith, lived with her aunt, Elizabeth Coombes in the pub at 87 Watney Street (Old House at Home); and worked as a barmaid until 1914 when she married my Grandfather, Frank Sheppard Williams who became the keeper of The Foresters beer house at 19 Coutts Road, in Stepney.
Outside the Forresters, 19 Rhodeswell Road - in 1914
Kindly provided by Bob Williams
I attach a photograph of The Foresters taken in August 1914 with my
Grandfather (in waistcoat), Grandmother, holding my newborn Father, standing
outside. According to his army papers, when he enlisted on 22nd
September 1916 his address was 19 Rhodeswell Road, Limehouse and his
occupation, beer keeper. Grandfather's address at the time of his discharge
on 18th April 1919 was 58 Dempsey. My Great Grandfather, Augustus
Williams was also a beer house keeper at the
Gladstone, 37 Dean Street. ***
My Dad's birth certificate which shows his place of birth as at 19 Rhodeswell Road on 5th August 1915; so presumably this is the year my Grandfather Frank Sheppard Williams took over The Forresters, and not in 1914. We think the photo might have been at the time of the Christening. We are trying to establish what happened when Grandfather enlisted in the army in September 1916. His army records show his address still to be 19 Rhodeswell Road at that time, but it is not clear what happened from then on except that on discharge in April 1919 he was living at 58 Demsey Street. ***
