KIDLINGTON is a large village and parish including tbe townships of Gosford
and Water Eaton, and the hamlet of Thrup. It is in the hundred of Wootton.
union of Woodstock, distant 4 miles E. by S. from the latter town, and 4 1/2
N. from Oxford. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a large and beautiful
cruciform structure in the early English and Norman styles, with square
tower, surmounted by a spire of elegant proportions; above the communion
table there is a fine window of stained glass; in the interior are also some
curiously carved old oak pews; and the church and churchyard contain several
tombs of ancient date. The living is a vicarage, value �300, iu the
patronage of Exeter College, Oxford. The Rev. J. P. Lightfoot, D.D., is
vicar, and the Revs. T. Whitehead and R. P. Lightfoot, curates. The
Wesleyans have a chapel here. There are alms houses for three men and three
women, founded in 1671 by Sir William Morton, knight; and several smaller
charities. The population of the parish in 1861 was 1507.
Watee Eaton is a township and chapelry in the parish of Kidlington, situate
on the Cherwell, 4 miles from Oxford. The church is a small plain building.
The living is a perpetual curacy, annexed to Kidlington. The population in
1861 was 115.
