Post Office Directory of Knettishall in 1865.
KNETTISHALL parish in 1844, is in the vale of the Little Ouse,
4 1/2 miles S. by W. of East Harling, and 8 miles N.N.E. of Ixworth, has only 79
souls, and 1,025 acres of land, including 320 acres of open heath, and 85a. of
plantations. Thomas Thornhill, Esq., owns nearly all the soil, and is lord of
the manor, and patron of the Church, (All Saints) which is an ancient thatched
fabric, with a tower and three bells. The living is a discharged rectory, valued
in K.B. at £6 7s. l1d., and now enjoyed by the Rev. William Darby, M.A., who has
27 A. 6p. of glebe, and a yearly modus of £120, awarded in lieu of tithes, in
1840. Here is a brick yard, under the management of John Bollingbroke. Mr.
George Matthew occupies Knettishall Hall, and farms nearly all the parish, which
anciently belonged to the Harlings, and afterwards to the Lovel and Cavendish
families.
