LAXFIELD is a large parish, in Hoxne hundred, union and rural
deanery, county court district of Framlingham, Suffolk archdeaconry, Norwich
diocese, East Suffolk, 9 miles north-west from Harleston Railway station, 26
from Ipswich, 6 north from Framlingham (its post town), and 4 from Stradbroke,
situated near the river Blythe. The church of All Saints is a fine handsome
building, with large square tower, surmounted by pinnacles, with a clock, and 6
bells: the interior has lofty nave, with wide span, and the roof is finely
ribbed: the windows are of stained glass, and it has also a very large antique
font. The parish register dates from 1579. The living is a discharged vicarage,
valued at �220 per annum, with parsonage house, and 13 acres of glebe, in the
gift of the Rev. E. Hollond, and held by the Rev. John Dallas, M.A. Here is a
National school for boys and girls: the school was rebuilt in 1859, and has an
endowment of �20. There are charities amounting to about �300 per annum, for the
repairs of the church, use of the poor, and keeping up the National and Endowed
schools, and for apprenticing boys and finding them clothing during their
apprenticeship. There is a Baptist chapel. There are two fairs for cattle and
sheep, on the 12th May and 25th October. John Crabtree, Esq., of Halesworth, is
lord of the manor, and Sir E. C. Kerrison, Bart., M.P., is the principal owner
of the land. The soil is a rich clay, with clayey subsoil, and very fertile. The
chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, turnips, and pasture. The population in
1861 was 1,031; area, 3,630 acres. The gross value is �7,005 15s., and the
rateable value �6,145 15s.
