My husband's grandfather, John Upton Funnell, was the tenant at The George in Canterbury Road, Croydon From 1874 until 1879. I attach his obituary and his son's on the same attachment. He later ran the Purley Arms, from 1879 until about 1925. ***
Retired Publicans Death - Mr John Upton Funnell, formerly licensee of the Purley Arms, Brighton Road, South Croydon died early on Saturday morning. He was eighty two years old, He retired from business six years agoe, when his son Mr J A Funnell, secretary of the Croydon Licensed Victuallers Association succeeded him. A ship's carpenter by trade, the late Mr Funnell, in his early life served on the Royal Yacht. He came to Croydon fifty two years ago, and after holding the license of the George, Canterbury Road, for five years he took over the Purley Arms in 1879. Brighton Road was then little more than a country lane. Mr Funnell's father was a nonagenarian. The funeral took place on Tuesday in Queen's Road Cemetery.
