In 1871, 1881 and 1891 census, the publican was William Welfare. His first
wife was Kesiah Steer, who he married in 1862, and I suspect they took over
the pub some time after that; by the 1871 census Kesiah had died. In 1877,
William married Catherine Martha Ward (my grandfather's sister) and the
couple are running the pub in 1881. They are still there in 1891, but
Catherine Martha Welfare died in 1898, and I think William then gave up the
pub, as he is no longer there in 1901. William died in 1902. *

William Welfare of the Neptune Hove: His probate in 1902 was granted to
Edward Welfare engineer (son by his first marriage) and James Ansell,
draper. William's second wife Catherine Martha Ward was related to James
Ansell, who was the brother of the George Ansell of the
Windmill on Clapham
Common. The family connections also extend to the Frederick French who ran
the Bridge Hotel in Uckfield and the Henry James Walker who ran the
Joiners Arms in
Bethnal Green. Catherine Martha Ward, James and George Ansell, Frederick
French and Henry Walker were all descendents of my great great grandfather
James Ward. *
I have found that William's brother Richard Welfare was also a publican, at
the Freemasons Tavern,
Hastings. *
