I am related to Walter Arnell Smith who was the proprietor of The Fisherman’s Joy in Selsey **
The branches of the family worked together. Fishing was basic to all when the weather and tides allowed. Some did a bit of farming at times and sold the milk. Others took on various pubs. The Arnell-Smiths descend from an Arnell and Mary Smith who did not marry. The Arnells descend from the same Arnell who did marry. ***

1882/Frederick Arnell Smith/../../../Kelly’s Directory **
After Frederick A Smith died in 1887 his wife, Harriet,
took over the Fishermans Joy. Then in 1892 son Walter took over here, and
Harriet took on the Crown in the High Street.
This pub was often used for inquests into drowning at sea. ***
Walter moved to the Neptune (opposite the Crown) and stayed there till his
death in 1915. Inquest reports him as publican of the
New Inn so he obviously tried running
another pub in the town. ***
