The Whale Fishery was a beerhouse known by its sign, and definitely pre-dates 1840. It was at about this time that the number of ships at Hull had significantly declined in Whale fishing, being hunted for their oil.

On Wednesday, the 6th day of September next.
All that the said well-accustomed and Commodious Public House, called the "Whale Fishery", situate at the Corner of Carmelite street, in Hungate, in the City of York, with the Brewhouse, Yard, and Outbuildings, to the same adjoining and belonging, and occupied by the said Christopher Bean.
Also a Dwelling House, abutting upon the said Public House, in the occupation of Martin Welch and George Precious.
And a Stable, adjoining the above premises, occupied by John Cable.
The whole of the Property is Freehold, and the Land-Tax redeemed; and Possession of the Public-House and the Premises occupied by Christopher Bean can be given at any time.
