The attached photo of the Star Hotel, viewed down Crosby-street from John-street, Maryport was taken in 1955 [a pity that it doesn’t show its full frontal aspect. I have never been able to ascertain from Maryport people, just when the hotel was demolished and why.
With reference to the photo, the Victoria Hotel, near left plus another smaller Public House bracing John-street, on the left then further down Crosby-street, the Lion and Lamb, near the small van. On the right, virtually abutting the Star Hotel is the Butchers Arms. Quite a cluster for this day, as opposed to the age of bustling emigration to places like America and Australia from Maryport in the early 1900s; it is little wonder that some might go!

I refer to George as my g, grandfather who had 3 sons born in Maryport, one of whom was my grandfather who emigrated to Australia in 1912 with his family. I was born 89 years ago to one of his sons! ***

He first had the Stat Hotel and stables from at least 21 June 1872 when he advertised in the "Maryport Advertiser? newspaper, I quote:
GEORGE DAWSON
Star Hotel Stables, John-street, Maryport LICENSED to let Post horses for hire. Open or Closed Carriages, Waggonettes, Dog Carts, Basket Carriages, Gigs, Hearses &c. All orders attended to at the Stables or at 49 John-street. ***

These advertisements were inserted in the newspaper about every second day.

In about September 1875 George Dawson and wife Sarah moved to the Lion and Lamb and continued to manage the Stables as the advertisements, again in the "Maryport Advertiser" stating on 24 September 1875. Referring to that address. The location of the Stables remained unchanged. ***
