Melvilles 1858 Directory of Kent.
DARTFORD, formerly called Darentford, is situated on the river Darent or Dart,
from which it derives its name. Here was at one time a Roman station. It is in
Axton and Dartford hundred, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, West Kent. The population
in 1851 was 6,054. It is 15 miles from London by road, and 17 by railway. Here
are gunpowder mills and extensive iron foundries, the property of Messrs. Hall.
Paper making is also
carried on, on an extensive scale. The church of the Holy Trinity is a very
ancient edifice in the Gothic style; in the interior are some very ancient
monuments. The living is a vicarage, in the patronage of the Bishop of
Worcester. There are. chapels belonging to Baptists, Wesleyans, and
Independents.
