Euston Road Tavern, 73 & 75 Euston Road NW1

For many years it was called simply the Euston Tavern, and it is now re-named O'Neill's (2007). ** Levy & Franks owned this pub under their "Modern Inns and Taverns" brand. *

Euston Tavern, 73 & 75 Euston Road - licensee Alex Hicks

It would appear that at some point the left hand corner of the building was taken down to accommodate a doorway (that is used today). This reduced the windows on each floor on the front elevation from six to five. At the same time I suspect the building was extended to the rear, as that now has five windows 'in depth' to make the building look more symmetrical.

In the 1871 census, Alexander Hicks is a barman at the Unicorn, 32 Shoreditch High Street.  He is listed as brother in law to the licensee, William Piper. Also of interest is the visitor listed two entries from him, being Mahalah Greenhough, his wife later that year.

I am a Great Grandson of Alexander Hicks who ran the Euston Tavern from circa 1880 until his death in 1905. His wife Mahalah and his eldest boys then ran it up until circa 1920. Alexander and Mahalah Hicks had nine children, the first seven were boys (between 1872 – 1883), then followed two girls (1885 & 1888). They were there for the 1891 census, but Mahalah put her foot down at that point saying that ‘…a pub was not the place to bring up young girls.’ So the family moved out to Woodside Park near Finchley.   *+
