York Herald, 17 March 1882 The Drink Map of York -
A correspondent writes (in 1882):-
I reference to the map showing the places for sale of alcoholic liquor in York, of which 228 are public houses and beerhouses, it may be of interest to know that during the last twenty years, in which the population has increased nearly 20,000, nearly fifty public and beer houses have ceased to exist. In only a very few cases have the licenses which were forfeited or lapsed been transferred to other houses. The following list does not profess to be complete, but merely contains the names of public houses which at the time occur to me:
