DEATH OF Mr. J. W. SCEARCE.
Licensee of "The Grayhound" for Forty-four Years.
The funeral or Mr. John William Scearce, licensee of the "Greyhound," Mount Pleasant, Reading. took place on Monday. Mr. Scearce. who was in his 70th year, had been landlord of the hostelry for 44 years. and the licence had been in the family for over a century. He was very popular in the district. both as "mine host" and as the proprietor of the shoeing forge adjoining the "Greyhound."At one time he was a mem-ber and keen worker for the Philanthropic Institute and the Old Fireside Club.
As a boy he was a chorister at St. Giles' Church, where the funeral service was held. The interment was in Reading cemetery. The Rev. T. R. D. Davis, MA., officiated, and Mr. P. R. Scrivener, F.R.C.O. was at the organ. The hymns sung were " Abide with Me " and " Now the labourer's task is o'er.".
The family mourners were:--Mrs Scearce (widow) Mr. A. Scearce and Mr. J. Scearce
(sons). Mrs. Dickens (daughter), Mr. and Mrs. G. Scearce and Mr. and Mrs. A. Scearce
(brothers and sisters-in-law). Mrs. Wakeneld (sister).
There were also present:--Mr. Fleet. Mr. Fueggle, Mrs. Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Smart, Mr. H. Phillips, Mr. and Mrs. Davey, Mr. W. Smith, Mrs. Stewart and Mr. and Mrs. Powell.

Liz and Ron: Mr.and Mrs. Stewart. Stan and Bert; Mrs. Mitchell and family: Mr. and Mrs. G. Emery; Mr. and Mrs. H. Taylor: Mrs. Smith and Mr. W. Purdue: Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Griffin; Walt, Sis and family; George and Florence Fleet: Mr. and Mrs. G. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. E. J. Maggs, of Princes Street, Reading.
