2 July 1870/The Vine: Mr Thomas Harding (late of the
Saracens Head, Ashford,
Kent) begs to inform the mobility, clergy, gentry and inhabitants of Reading
and surrounding districts that he has purchased the above Hotel, and trusts
with energy, attention and supplying a genuine article, he will receive the
same amount of patronage bestowed upon his predecessors, Messrs, Heath,
Koppel and Walker.
Mr Harding can assure the public that nothing will be wanting on his part to
uphold the "Vine" as a first clsass house./Berkshire Chronicle

The details fit my great grandmother who returned from New Zealand to
England in 1865 with her husband Thomas Harding and children; and then in
1873 came back to NZ again. In 1871 all the children can be found at
boarding school in the UK. Sara(h) is listed as married and as ‘victualler’s
wife’ so Thomas must normally have been there. I haven’t been able to find
him anywhere else, so far. *
