York Licenses - The temperance faction in York have lodged objections to the renewal of 20 licenses in the city, and these will be heard at the Brewster Sessions next Tuesday, These objections are independent of those made by the police, although in certain cases both parties are objecting to the same house.
The Chief Constable has, acting under instructions of the justices, prepared an exhaustive report on the condition of the licensed houses in the city, and the manner in which they are conducted. He has personally inspected each house, and he calls particular attention to the ale and beer houses which have "on" licenses. He points out that a large number of these are so constructed, being surrounded by adjacent property, and in many cases being so old, that proper police supervision is difficult.
Reference is made to the inadequate sanitary arrangements in a number of cases, and the lack of separate private rooms for the occupants. Of the total of the houses inspected he singles out eight alehouses and five beerhouses as particularly bad examples of the defects enumerated.
The Lord Mayor (Alderman E Gray) presided at a meeting of the York City Justices on Wednesday, at which it was decided to wait till Tuesday when those houses to which the temperance party have not objected, in the Walmgate and Hungate area - in which the magistrates have decided objections shall be made to all the 53 houses, in order to deal with each on its merits - shall then be objected to and dealt with at the adjourned Sessions on the 19th instance.
Objections were received from ratepayers against twenty houses; Mr W Matterson, of St Saviourgate, on behalf of the local temperance party objected to the following:
